REDMOND DATA CENTER
Location: Redmond, WA
General Contractor: Sellen Construction
PRIME was selected as the design-build electrical contractor by the client and Sellen Construction for this project. The stand-alone facility aims to consolidate computer labs from the clients main office and house servers used for software development and testing. The building symbolizes a cultural shift from the traditional model, where product groups manage their own lab in the office, to a centrally managed and more energy efficient alternative. The 57,000 square foot lab contains 48 pods with 1,200 servers per pod; for a total of 35,000 to 50,000 servers at full capacity.
This data center is the client's first sustainable data center. Energy is saved by consolidating processes into as few servers as possible. Unlike other data centers, the facility requires very little artificial cooling. More than 95% of the year the servers are cooled by outside air. An evaporative cooling system will only kick in when the outside temperature exceeds 75 degrees. The cooling design along with other techniques means that servers in the facility will require a third less energy than if they were placed in traditional office buildings. The client expects to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 12,000 tons per year using this facility.
